Some collaborations don’t begin with a proposal deck or a meeting room.
They begin with a message—quiet, sincere, and impossible to ignore.
A few months ago, we received an email from Rahma Mkai, Director of a local NGO in Tanzania called SEE Africa. She shared the story of a grassroots initiative called Ujuzi—a Swahili word meaning skillwork—created to support young girls from vulnerable communities, including those affected by early marriage, FGM, and abuse.
Their goal is both simple and life-changing:
teach practical making skills, help the girls create products they can sell, and support them in building small businesses—one step at a time, with dignity and independence.
As we read Rahma’s message, we felt something very clear.
Yes. We want to stand beside them!
At Boowan Nicole, we’ve always believed that creativity isn’t just decoration—it’s restoration. It’s a quiet way of saying: I still get to shape my future.
Why We Said Yes
We make silicone molds. But we’ve never felt that molds are only “tools.”
They are starting points.
A mold can turn raw material into a first finished piece.
A first finished piece into confidence.
Confidence into consistency.
Consistency into income.
And income into options—real options—especially for someone who has been told they have none.
So we committed to donating a selection of molds to support Ujuzi’s learning journey—designed to help them explore different product types and develop skills they can build on over time.
Because when someone is learning, the most powerful gift is not perfection.
It’s possibility.
The Moment That Stayed With Us: An Unboxing Under a Mango Tree
When Rahma later told us they were opening the boxes, we expected a simple update.
What we didn’t expect was the setting:
Their training and unboxing would take place under a mango tree, in the front yard of the SEE Africa office.
No studio lights. No fancy setup.
Just real people, real sunlight, and a real beginning.
When the photos and videos arrived, our team watched them more than once. Not because the quality was “perfect”—but because the feeling was.
The joy was honest. The excitement was bright. And the care was obvious: they held each mold like it mattered, like it was meant to last, like it carried something bigger than itself.
Rahma told us they plan to use these molds for a long time—impacting not just the five girls currently training, but many more in the future.
That sentence stayed with us.
Because it reminded us: the most meaningful things rarely happen in perfect conditions. They happen in everyday places—like a mango tree’s shade—when people choose hope anyway.
What This Partnership Taught Us About “Everyday Moments”
Our brand tagline is “Sensory design for everyday moments.”
And this partnership deepened our understanding of what an “everyday moment” can be.
In Tanzania, an everyday moment might look like:
- a girl learning to pour, set, and demold for the first time
- a finished piece placed gently on a table—proof that “I can do this”
- a product photo taken with pride, ready to be shared
- the first sale, and the first time someone realizes: my hands can support my life
That’s why we’re moved by Ujuzi.
Because it’s not only about making beautiful objects—it’s about rebuilding confidence, step by step, through skill.
We don’t take that lightly. And we don’t take their trust lightly.
